Serious Game: total immersion in sustainable transition

One’s perspective...

Mickael Merley

Founder of Planet’Impact

From sport to sustainable transition, a career focused on the common good

On a personal level, I’ve always had a real appetite for organizing unifying, inclusive events. I started my career working for major groups like Orange and VINCI, in the fields of marketing, sponsoring and sporting events.
It was a way of combining my passions with my career goals. I spent ten years working on sporting projects with a strong focus on civic responsibility, charity and community.
After that I headed up a non-profit that used sport as a means of inclusion, and that’s when I realized how fun, engaging activities can help address real local issues: disability, equity, inclusion, the intergenerational divide, etc.
We took advantage of the COVID downtime to work with companies on their main CSR challenges. This experience inspired us to create Planet’Impact, a sustainable transition-themed serious game, to educate and inspire company employees on sustainability issues.

Games as a driver for engagement

Serious games are a unique way of making complex issues such as climate change, CSR and energy transition accessible and concrete without making people feel guilty.
The gamified format enables players to test decisions and observe their impacts and promotes discussion. It’s an immersive approach that creates empathy and solidarity, which are essential for going beyond just raising awareness and rousing people to action.

Planet’Impact: an immersive, collective experience

A Planet’Impact session lasts around two hours.
Each team represents a fictitious national delegation at COP30.
Like an escape game, it starts with a triggering event: the players have to address specific challenges based on real-life job scenarios (mobility, purchasing, digital, finance, climate, etc.).

The experience consists of three workshops, an inspiration phase with real-life stories from all over the world, and an acculturation period with data and infographics on the theme of the game.

Players learn about existing solutions, compare their impact and together think of measures that are applicable to their company.

For organizations, Planet’Impact is a team-building experience, a way of fostering CSR culture and a brainstorming session for operational ideas. Each employee takes away some concrete guidelines and examples to implement.

Measurable, inspiring impacts

The effects of the game can be seen immediately.
Participants gain lots of insights in terms of perspective, best practices and inspiring initiatives.
Some companies decide to leave the information and visual aids from the game – posters, infographics, stories, etc – on display in their offices after the sessions, to keep the message alive for their employees.

Others have taken it even further, for example by adopting some of the solutions that they found out about during the game, such as Mobeelity, an app that allows companies to manage sustainable mobility for its employees, or Cool Roof, a company that paints the roofs of industrial buildings white to reduce their temperature and energy consumption.

Companies also use the visuals and key figures in their internal and external newsletters when communicating on CSR matters.

At Econocom, this approach is part of a plan to train the purchasing teams and introduce responsible practices into their selection criteria.

Planet’Impact is working closely with the CSR department towards a common goal: accelerating the transition to responsible digital. A specific version of the game called Digital Planet’Impact was designed for companies in the digital industry.

This version of the game is designed to alert employees on best practices, encourage them to apply a responsible approach to purchasing decisions and provide the sales teams with a practical sustainability awareness tool for clients.

This approach illustrates the group’s CSR goals and is also perfectly suited to the specific needs and challenges of its activities.

One ambition: to engage all companies

Planet’Impact aims to become the go-to partner for sustainability awareness in companies.
The aim is to engage as many employees as possible on environmental transition issues, in addition to other initiatives such as Les Fresques du Climat or L’Atelier 2 Tonnes.

For Mickaël, the project’s main strength is that it’s practical and business-oriented: while other solutions measure the individual impact or explain the causes of climate deregulation, Planet’Impact helps companies take collective action.

The feedback is unanimous: participants are motivated, inspired and engaged.
Planet’Impact now plans to help all companies that want to get their staff involved in the sustainable transition, in a positive, practical, inspiring way.
