One’s perspective...

Virginie Kristell Le Barbu

Global Sustainability Director – International Markets, Lenovo 360 Circle Lead

Environmental responsibility is not just a commitment—it is a core value embedded across every level of our organization and our value chain engagement

Virginie Le Barbu is the driving force behind Lenovo’s sustainability efforts with the downstream ecosystem and the establishment of the Lenovo 360 Circle, a sustainability community crafted for the channel by the channel. She leads Lenovo's push for more sustainable solutions, circular economy practices, and a net-zero future. Through the Lenovo 360 Circle, she brings together industry leaders to turn sustainability ambitions into action, proving that collaboration is the key to real change. Her work ensures that Lenovo not only meets its environmental commitments but also helps shape the future of responsible technology.

The importance of sustainability

Sustainability has become a key element of corporate strategy, supported by comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) programs that create value for both internal and external stakeholders.

As a global technology leader, Lenovo recognizes its responsibility to contribute to a more sustainable world—not only through innovative technology but also by leveraging the scale of its business. Sustainability is a key driver of innovation, shaping how we develop smarter technology for all while addressing evolving industry trends and customer expectations.

Lenovo has aligned its ESG approach at three levels that are complementary

Corporate Level

Driving intelligent transformation and guiding an ESG vision to create smarter technology for all, Lenovo is committed to achieving net-zero by 2050. The company integrates inclusive and responsible innovation across its entire value chain, working towards a more sustainable and equitable digital society.

Value Chain Level

A commitment to fostering a responsible ecosystem through a smarter circular approach that prioritize sustainability at every stage of a product's life is key. Lenovo engages its entire value chain from upstream suppliers to downstream partners to ensure a holistic impact.

Products, Services and Solutions Level

Accelerating business model transformation through key climate actions - reducing GHC emissions, improving energy efficiency, and mitigating e-waste by extending product lifecycles- is a priority for many companies. Lenovo focuses on those areas to drive sustainable change.

Lenovo was in the first group of companies to receive net-zero validation from the Science Based Targets initiatives in 2023, making it the first PC and smartphone maker with targets validated by the Net-Zero Standard. Lenovo’s net-zero journey is focused on leadership, credibility, alignment to climate science, and focus on absolute reductions as part of its strategy and net-zero targets.

3 initiatives designed to reduce the carbon impact of products and services

  • At the manufacturing stage, companies leverage factory layouts that incorporate advanced energy-saving technology and carbon management. For example, the low-temperature solder technology (used in over 50 million PCs) and the use of renewable energy—Lenovo has more than tripled its solar energy generation since FY 2018/19—demonstrate this commitment.
  • Energy efficiency during the use phase is also a key priority, helping customers decarbonize their operations through energy-efficient devices, optimization software, or unique technologies like lenovo's Neptune liquid cooling for servers.
  • Value chain engagement is essential: Lenovo works with its supply chain to increase SBTi commitment rates and encourages supplier emission reduction initiatives. The company has also engaged its downstream value chain in recent years through the Lenovo 360 Circle.

A smarter circular approach

Lenovo promotes a responsible ecosystem through its value chain via a smarter circular approach, enabling the group to address sustainability at all product lifecycle stages, from extraction to disposal.

At Lenovo, we embrace a smarter circular approach to minimize waste, extend product life, and optimize resource use.

Smarter circular design

Lenovo is integrally prioritizing the use of sustainable materials and recycled content in product design and supply chain processes to support innovation and circularity. For example, over 300 million pounds of post-consumer recycled plastics have been incorporated into Lenovo's products since 2005, showcasing a commitment to reducing environmental impact and advancing sustainability goals.

Smarter circular use

Optimizing repair and reuse is essential to extending product life, reducing climate impact, and supporting the circular economy. Devices are built to exceed rigorous standards and undergo extensive quality checks demonstrate this commitment, with notable products earning high repairability scores and industry awards for serviceability.

Smarter circular return

Innovative sustainability solutions are transforming the IT lifecycle, with products offered as-a-service to maximize asset sustainability. Examples of such solutions include Device/Infrastructure as a Service, Asset Recovery Services, and Certified Refurbished solutions, all designed to promote efficient resource use and reduce environmental impact.

Lenovo 360 Circle

As part of the Lenovo 360 Partner Program, launched in 2021, the company introduced Lenovo 360 Circle, a sustainability partner community, with more than 500 members, designed to drive meaningful and impactful sustainable initiatives within and with our channel ecosystem. Recognizing that sustainability is best tackled through collective action, Lenovo 360 Circle is a community-driven initiative to accelerate decarbonization and responsible consumption by breaking down barriers across the value chain.
